Magazine and BEST LATE NIGHT MENU by Alive Magazine Hot List, was named as one of the TOP 55 BEST BOURBON BARS in America.  The list, created by The Bourbon Review, was compiled through years of onsite research and the trusted opinions of the best minds in our industry.  The list criteria was simple: the bar must showcase Bourbon in the proud manner it deserves, it must educate its patrons about Bourbon and either provide them with a superior selection, or a combination of great selection and a reputation for showcasing Bourbon in their cocktails.  Five regions were selected for representation:  Bourbon Country, Northeast, the South, Midwest and West.  Of the 55 establishments selected, 7 were from the Midwest, 2 were from Missouri and Sanctuaria was the only bar named from Saint Louis.

Saint Louis, MO (February 22, 2013) – Saint Louis’ AWARD WINNING MIXOLOGIST, Matt Seiter, Bar Manager and Chief Liquor Officer at Sanctuaria, recently named BEST DRINK MENU in  St. Louis by the Riverfront Times, BEST COCKTAIL MENU by Alive Magazine and one of the TOP 50 RESTAURANTS IN ST. LOUIS by St. Louis Magazine, will be leaving for the next stop on his national book tour for  “The Dive Bar of Cocktail Bars: How We Rewrote the Rules and Recipes One Cocktail at a Time” on February 24, 2013.  This time he is heading south to New Orleans.  His first stop will be at Bellocq, located in The Hotel Modern, from 5pm – 7pm.  This event is open to the public.

On Monday, February 25, 2013, Seiter will accompany Samogon Liquor Company, the sponsor of his trip, to the 2013 Inland Seafood NOLA Experience from 3pm – 6pm at The Foundary.  He will have copies of his book available for purchase, as well as signing.  The Inland Seafood NOLA Experience is a show case of Inland Seafood’s superior seafood, heritage meats and artisan specialty foods perfectly paired with wine and spirits. It is an opportunity for approximately 300 local chefs, restaurateurs, caterers and other food service professionals to engage with producers, manufacturers and purveyors of the finest foods and spirits available.

From there, Seiter will head to the Shamrock for the United States Bartenders Guild Local Chapter party from 6pm – 9pm.

Look: I can tell you that Hendricks BBQ sprawls across 17,000 square feet on two floors. I can tell you that this restaurant along St. Charles’ historic Main Street is also slated to be a live-music venue and a moonshine distillery (neither is operational yet), that it seats some 600, that the upper deck of its patio affords a view of the Katy Trail and the parking lots alongside it so sweeping that even the parking lots themselves look majestic. I can tell you all this and more besides, but nothing conveys the sheer size of the place better than the moment when a server sets a slab of baby-back ribs thicker than your own forearm in front of you, and before your perspective can unskew itself, you think, “Is that all?”

It feels odd to call a cuisine as essentially American as barbecue not merely trendy, but glowing-with-radioactivity hot. Yet if you have any doubts, Hendricks BBQ provides the proof as well as the exclamation point. This is no barbecue joint or shack or roadside stand; it’s the sort of showy production that in another decade would have been a corporate-clubby steak house or sleek pan-Asian sushi bar. Its owners aren’t grizzled veterans of the barbecue circuit; they’re physician Gurpreet Padda and Ami Grimes, partners in In Good Company, whose diverse restaurant portfolio includes Cafe Ventana, Sanctuaria and Diablitos Cantina. (Hendricks takes its moniker from Grimes’ maiden name.)

At a glance the spacious dining room does look as if it were ordered straight from the ‘cuetalog, with its forest’s worth of weathered-wood paneling and pig-prominent décor. But the room’s tall windows and dramatic vaulted skylight both brighten the space and give it a more contemporary feel than, say, the sprawling 17th Street Barbecue in O’Fallon, Illinois, and a series of paintings of blues musicians — commissioned originals, no less — balances the barbecue tchotchkes. Though the menu makes the sacrilegious claim that the ribs at Hendricks are “fall off the bone tender,” pitmaster Matt Vanderbeck and Chris Lee, executive chef of Padda and Grimes’ restaurant group, prove themselves adept at the arts of the smoker and Southern cuisine.

Move this up to the top of our must-buy list of books: Sanctuaria’s award-winning mixologist Matt Seiter’s cocktail guide, The Dive Bar of Cocktail Bars: How We Rewrote the Rules and Recipes One Cocktail, is set for release on Tue., Dec. 11.

In the book, Seiter, who pens our monthly cocktail column The Mix, divulges his secrets and stories behind Sanctuaria’s revered cocktail menu. The “no-holds-barred manual” provides step-by-step instructions allowing readers to re-create the cocktails they’ve grown to love while tasting their way through Sanctuaria’s extensive Cocktail Club, which Seiter founded.

Seiter’s new book features tips and tricks of the trade for tinctures, bitters and other “secret” ingredients used in Sanctuaria’s cocktails. He also explains his choice not to use mass-marketed brands in the inventory at Sanctuaria, providing full access to his tasting notes for every spirit he chose.

To celebrate the book release, Sanctuaria will be hosting a Cocktails by Candlelight event, sponsored by Camus Cognac, at 7pm on Mon., Dec. 10 – Sanctuaria’s 3rd Anniversary. Attendees will receive a complimentary copy of Seiter’s book – a day before it is released to the public. Tickets are $45 per person for Cocktail Club Members and $50 per person for non-members, and they include all-you-can eat food and drink.

Sanctuaria Releases First Cocktail Book Written by Bar Manager Matt Seiter

Sanctuaria (4198 Manchester Avenue; 314-535-9700) announced this week that its releasing a cocktail book penned by its acclaimed bar manager Matt Seiter titled The Dive Bar of Cocktails: How We Rewrote the Rules and Recipes One Cocktail at a Time. A book release party titled “Cocktails by Candlelight” is scheduled to coincide with the restaurant’s third anniversary on Monday, December 10, at 7 p.m. at Sanctuaria. The book’s official release date is Tuesday, December 11.

Gut Check caught up with Seiter to find out what’s inside the cocktail book and what to expect at Sanctuaria’s upcoming shindig.

“There’s over 150 recipes in the book,” Seiter says. “Readers can expect all those recipes, how to make them, and more. I give away (well, sell away) a majority of our housemade ingredient recipes, tips/tricks we use behind our bar daily, stories and anecdotes for all of our own creations, and a bibliography for every classic cocktail on the menu.”
